If you’ve got personal insurance and have made a previous claim, are you worried about the impact that that claim will have on your future premiums? Check out this video and I’ll walk you through the key things that you’ll need to know about the impact of any claim on future premiums for your insurance policies.

Our final question for this week is what impact does making a claim have on my premiums? If you have insurance, and you need to claim, my hope is that everybody has a good claims experience and gets the claims that they’re entitled to.

When we’re looking at lump sum insurances, so your life, your TPD, and your trauma insurance, if you make a claim, then typically you won’t have any cover left. So, this isn’t the scenario that we’re talking about here, and what impact that claim will have on your premiums.

The one that we’re talking about here is income protection, so whilst you are on claim with an income protection policy, so this is unable to work, you’ll be paid an amount of money from the insurance company.

At that time that you’re on claim, for most good policies, you won’t be paying premiums at the time whilst you’re on claim as well, which is really good, but there will come a time that you’re, hopefully, well enough again to go back to work.

Now, what happens with the insurance policy at that point? At that point, when you go back, the have the opportunity to start paying for your insurance premiums again. They don’t change, they’re exactly the same as what they would’ve been had you have not claimed, and you’ll have exactly the same cover again, too, which is really good, and it’s a really awesome feature of an income protection policy, really.

Now, personally I’ve had three income protection claims, and I’ve never had a day off work. So, as I mentioned before, I’ve had a lot of fractures, and each fracture I had, I was able to access what they call a specific injury benefit.

So, from an insurance perspective, the policies that I have don’t actually owe me anything, and have actually been really good and beneficial for me, in that sense too. So, I still continue to pay my premiums, they haven’t changed, even though I have had benefits paid to me along the journey as well.

So, if you’re worried about this, there are other scenarios, such as your car insurance, where if you have a claim, you lose your no claim bonus, that sort of thing, that simply isn’t the case when it comes to personal insurance.
